To meet a growing demand for cardiovascular services for the tri-state.  The Heart Group and Deaconess Hospital reopened an outpatient cath lab.  The Deaconess Heart Center Cath Lab is a free-standing outpatient facility located at 415 West Columbia Street, Evansville, Indiana, the main office for The Heart Group.

Scott Starrett, M.D., Medical Director for the outpatient cath lab stated.  "The outpatient cath lab is for the convenience of the patients and their families.  The staff will admit and assist with the procedure and recovery of the patient at the same location."

The type of procedures performed in the outpatient cath lab are: diagnostic right/left heart cauterizations; peripheral angiograms (carotid angiograms, abdominal aortagram, renal angiograms and extremity angiograms), trans esophageal echoes; cardioversions for atrial fibrillation; and coronary angiograms, including grafts.

Research Department Recognized As Being A Top Enrollment Site In The World

THG Clinical Research Department recently received reorganization as being one of the top ten enrolling sites of 160 cardiac clinics worldwide for the ARISE trial, an international study being conducted by AntheroGenics, Inc.  The ARISE (Aggressive Reduction of Inflammation Stops Events) is a pivotal Phase III clinical trial using an oral anti-inflammatory drug (AGI-1067).  This compound is the first in a new class of drugs known as vascular protectants that aim to reduce inflammation in blood vessel walls.  The study will evaluate the impact of AGI-1067 on outcome measures such as death due to coronary disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularization and unstable angina in patients who have CVD.  THG continues to actively enroll patients who meet the enrollment criteria.

THG is also one of 200 study sites in North America, Europe and Australia participating in a clinical trial conducted by Pfizer, Inc.  This is a Phase III double-blind, randomized, parallel group study of the fixed compound CETP/atorvastatin administered to subjects with prior CHD or PVD, symptomatic CAD or Type 2 diabetes compared to atovastatin alone.  CETP (cholesteryl ester transfer protein) inhibitor interferes with the transfer of cholesterol particles in the blood.  The primary goal is to demonstrate whether or not the combination drug can incrementally reduce the risk of future occurrence of major cardiovascular events.  The study population will be subjects 45-75 years old at high risk for CVD events and who are eligible for statin treatment.

The Heart Group will be sending a letter to patients who might qualify for this study.  If you have a patient that you think may qualify for this study, please call Linda Burdge at (812) 464-9133.
